Text Box: Update # 3
  January 2003
Text Box: Statistics Canada: Prince Albert Has Highest
Per Capita Aboriginal Population
Text Box: nine.Twenty years ago Prince Albert was considered one of the most racist cities in Canada. Since then many initiatives have been taken to improve this reality; employment and education are much more accessible to First Nations people. One of the aboriginal people who spearheaded the municipal Race Relations Committee, Bernice Sayese, was just named Prince Albert’s Citizen of the Year for 2002, in recognition of her contributions to the good of the entire community in a wide variety of fields.
There is much yet to be done. In the words of Grand Chief Gary Merasty, leader of the Prince Albert Grand Council: “I think that the tide is starting to turn if you look very closely, but the social problems are still very visible.”

Text Box: This past October both Pat and Waltera’s mothers were called home to eternal life. Mary Grisé passed away in hospital in Midland, Ontario on October 4th. Pat returned to Prince Albert after her mother’s funeral to continue to help Waltera take care of her mother. On October 19th Mary Anne Van Gennip passed away at home in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Both were surrounded by loving family at the time of their passing.
In addition to their proud support of their missionary daughters, these two women had much in common. Each was devoted to her family and community through a long life of generous self-giving. For both, Text Box: faith was the sustaining foundation of daily life and practical choices. Both were active in business affairs well into their seventies. They maintained a keen interest in the world around them to the very end of their years with us. Always they shared their wit and wisdom and practical insight with those in need of advice or cheering up. They bore with grace the diminishment of their declining years, trusting in God to bring their lives to fulfillment.
Mary Grisé and Mary Anne Van Gennip leave to their families and friends an abiding legacy of love and inspiration. They will be remembered with much love.

Personal Notes

Since the loss of both of our mothers, Pat and I are in a transition space . We are “slowing down” for some personal recovery time, while also taking time to catch up on outstanding administrative work. For the time being, we are responding to whatever ministry comes along, e.g. baptism and marriage preparations, etc., but we are not seeking more work.  Second Harvest Circle is doing well. In the near future we will also be discerning the best ministry use for our two houses.                          --Waltera
